Meet Our Team

John R. Brice

Publisher Co-Founder

I live in Boulder with my wife, Jill, and three children. As a local entrepreneur with 40 years of experience in the media industry, I have quite an extensive background.
I also started Campus Publishers, the largest publisher of official university visitor guides, and, the University Visitors Network. I have developed more than 50 websites and published more then 38 mobile apps currently available in the iTunes and Google Play stores.

In my past life in New York, I worked for Advertising Age magazine for eleven years and was the founding publisher of Advertising Age’s Creativity Magazine. During my time in New York, I sat on the board of the New York Advertising Club and was the publisher of Lions News, the daily newspaper of the Cannes International Advertising Festival in Cannes, France, for three years. I also worked for the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times in Chicago and New York.
In my free time, I am an avid skier, classic car enthusiast, and I love projects, family and friends.

Jill Nagel-Brice

President Co-Founder

Seven months pregnant with two small children, my mom, a big dog, 13 pieces of luggage and a dog crate, I boarded a plane to Boulder, while my husband, John, and my dad drove our car across country, filled to the brim with boxes of our belongings. We wanted to start a whole new life in Boulder. We had no jobs and no home. Just a school for our kids and a dream to live in this great town. Why? Because Boulder!
While falling in love with Boulder and all that it has to offer, we built a flourishing national media company that specifically targets visitors in the university market. It struck us that there was a screaming, gaping niche here in our own backyard: an in-depth resource guide written by locals for visitors who come to explore Boulder. Hence, Travel Boulder was realized.
With sixteen years of experience in contract development, human resources and short-and long-term strategy planning, I am discovering many hats for me to wear at Travel Boulder.
I enjoy hiking, skiing and walking with my friends, but my greatest passion is ballet and jazz dance, something that I have studied since I was 6 years old and still do today.

Aimee Heckel

I’m one of the rare and endangered native Coloradan species. I grew up on the Front Range and earned a journalism degree from Colorado State University. I worked as an award-winning journalist and columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera for 15 years. I also have a ton of travel writing experience. My experience spans travel writing for Tripsavvy, Culture Trip, Fodor’s Travel Books and USA Today, among many others. I also helped found Travel Boulder and created its editorial vision, online and in print. I have written or contributed to 10 books, mostly travel, including my own travel book, which hit the #1 best-seller in four different categories. I was also a columnist for HuffPost Weird, where my coverage centered around Boulder’s quirkiness. I first met my husband (a Boulder County native) on the Pearl Street Mall, and my daughter was born at Boulder Community Hospital.

Drew Baron

Website Developer

I have an undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Bates College and a master’s in Design & Technology from Parsons. I’ve started a few internet culture sites and enjoy the stereotypical Boulder lifestyle of riding bikes with my son & hiking in the foothills with my dog.

Brittany Anas

I’m a former newspaper reporter at the Boulder Daily Camera, with more than a decade of experience hula-hooping in the newsroom (literally; we kept a hula-hoop in the office), as well as covering the University of Colorado and Boulder. I’m now a freelance writer, specializing in travel. I am also a contributor to publications like Men’s Journal, Women’s Health, The Denver Post,, Denver Life Magazine, Eat This, Not That! and others. When I’m not writing, I love hiking on Mt. Sanitas with my pot-belly pig, gremlin mix that the rescue group described as a “Boston Terrier.”

Barry Bortnick

Writer / Journalist

I’ve spent over 30 years covering scandal and crime as a journalist for newspapers and national news outlets across the nation.
I’ve written two books about Death Row Inmates and produced national documentaries about tragedies and corruption.
My work has appeared in The New York Post, as well as numerous newspapers across California and Colorado.
I am a licensed private investigator and the author of Deadly Urges, and Polly Klaas: The Murder of America’s Child. Deadly Urges follows the depraved acts of a California Death Row inmate. Polly Klaas: The Murder of America’s Child highlights one of the most horrific crimes in California history: the kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Polly Klaas.
I currently work on various freelance gigs and private investigation assignments.

Ann Duncan

I am a nature and travel photographer living in Boulder. Since forming my company, Synergraphics, in 1976, I have shot both stock and assignment work for a diversity of editorial and commercial clients. I now shoot only stock, focusing primarily on the Colorado tourism business. Passionate about the outdoors since childhood, I frequently travel throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain West, exploring and hiking in search of evocative images for calendars, cards, magazines and websites. I love the excitement of discovering a new location and capturing its unique beauty. I pride myself in crisp, colorful, flower-filled landscapes and am persistent about waiting for the right conditions. When the light, wind, clouds and flowers cooperate for the camera, it is always a magical experience.

Jim “Frog” Heckel

My nickname is Frog (given to me by my daughter when she was in elementary school, and it stuck). I have lived in Colorado since the ‘70s and like to consider myself a native, never looking back. I have been an amateur/freelance photographer for decades. Originally starting out with a Russian Kalimar SLR ($50!) in the ’70s, I later graduated into the world of Nikon SLR snapping and darkroom work. Upon retiring from HP/Agilent, I now have entered the digital single lens reflex era, leaning back on my old manual processes/fundamentals. I have been published in various magazines for Hewlett-Packard, as well as various auto mags. When not taking photos, I visit Uganda multiple times every year, serving as president for the nonprofit Think Humanity.

Isaac Nagel Brice

I love cameras and hate talking about myself but here goes nothing! I am a student at CU Boulder pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree. I love cycling skiing, hiking, mountain biking and being outdoor. The Boulder lifestyle is really the perfect world for me. The combination of art, technology, and nature is unlike anywhere else.
