Facebook

Set deep within the Elk Mountains on Colorado’s Western Slope, Crested Butte flew under the radar for years. But not any more.

The secret’s out about this historic mining town, which has embraced its new reputation as a top outdoor destination. As a hub for mountain biking and the self-proclaimed “wildflower capital of Colorado,” it deserves a spot on your summer bucket list.

Crested Butte has accommodations for every style, from historic gems to tucked-away cabins. It also boasts a remarkable dining scene and a 10-day festival celebrating the town’s vibrant blooms. Scenic hikes, trail rides and more promise an unforgettable weekend getaway. Here’s how to make the most of your visit.

Established as a miner’s hotel in 1919, Elk Mountain Lodge is perfectly situated in downtown’s historic district. Choose from 19 comfortable guest rooms, with those on the third floor offering stellar views. Enjoy sips from the private, on-site bar and a full, free breakfast each morning. Dine in the charming sunroom or on the patio, then pedal a short distance to downtown. Bikes are available for free to overnight guests.

If you’re seeking a more luxurious stay, look to Vaquera House. Featuring a modern mountain feel, this boutique 10-room hotel opened in downtown Crested Butte in 2022. Spend a summer evening enjoying free drinks, roasting s’mores around the outdoor firepit and soaking in the rooftop hot tub. Sports equipment rentals and cruiser bikes round out the amenities.

Also upscale, WestWall Lodge features a rustic design with stone fireplaces and sturdy timber furnishings. This 23-room rental property is just steps from the lifts at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, which offers slopeside fun year-round. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate these accommodations, as will families seeking multiple rooms and homey amenities like kitchens and in-unit laundry rooms. A free shuttle offers easy access to downtown.

Those seeking a more peaceful escape should consider the Pioneer Guest Cabins located just outside of town. Fall asleep to the sounds of Cement Creek, which runs past the resort’s eight cozy guest cabins. Each is decked out with Western decor and offers modern amenities like fully-equipped kitchens and high-speed WiFi. But with fly-fishing, mountain biking and some of the region’s best wildflower hikes right outside your door, this retreat is an ideal place to disconnect from your devices.

Since it debuted last summer, Two Twelve has garnered a following for its fresh take on live-fire cooking. From crispy confit garlic potatoes to braised buffalo and beans, many of the ingredients on its seasonal menu are sourced from Colorado. Meanwhile, sharable plates like the dry-aged tomahawk and half-rack of elk with huckleberry foie emulsion also come from small regional producers. To celebrate a special occasion or to simply treat yourself, savor these thoughtful dishes in its elegant dining room. The restaurant also features a lovely shaded patio along the town’s main drag.

For a more casual meal on Elk Avenue, head to The Secret Stash. This beloved mainstay has a lively bohemian vibe, with eclectic trinkets from around the world decorating its interior. The menu is also wide-ranging, but the boozy cocktails and signature pizzas are definitely the most popular options on the list. Choose from several specialties, like its award-winning “Notorious F.I.G.” pie, topped with blue cheese crumbles, prosciutto, black mission figs and truffle oil. Either its patio or cool basement level are great places to post up in the summertime. But be forewarned: You’ll probably have to wait for a table. Despite the name, this place is far from secret.

You’re likely to find more residents than tourists dining at Thai Smile, an indoor-outdoor space that debuted downtown earlier this year. The relaxed ambiance complements comforting dishes like savory pho, rich curry and spicy drunken noodles. Pair these entrees with a boba milk tea or refreshing lychee martini.

Après drinks are easy to find in Crested Butte. Pay a visit to Montanya Distillers’ tasting room in town or take an intimate tour of its production facility just a few miles south. Small-batch rum is its specialty, served as sample flights and craft libations.

For a wider selection, check out Anthracite Spirits Company’s tasting lounge. This local distillery opened on Elk Avenue in 2022 with its flagship gin, signature vodka and flavorful liqueurs which appear in classic and house cocktails. Non-alcoholic beverages and curated small bites round out the menu.

Though this town is small and remote, its dining scene shines—especially during the Crested Butte Wine and Food Festival. From July 13-20, local purveyors, nationally acclaimed chefs, sommeliers and epicurean experts come together for one of the state’s best wine festivals. Attend culinary seminars, foraging hikes, multi-course dinners and the $95 grand tasting event featuring unlimited bites, plus more than two hundred wines and spirits.

Even better, this event coincides with the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival. More than 150 programs will take place from July 11-20, from art and cooking classes to adventurous Jeep tours and guided hikes for all abilities. Event registration costs vary and space is limited.

If you miss the celebration, consider an interpretive wildflower hike with the research staff at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Biologists from across the world and students of all ages gather at this unique field station, which lies in the ghost town of Gothic. Access it via a 20-minute drive north of downtown.

Of course, you don’t need a guide to experience Crested Butte’s blooms. Spot Colorado’s iconic columbines along the 2-mile Judd Falls Trail, fields of mule’s ear sunflowers on the 4.4-mile Walrod Loop and sweeping vistas from the 5.8-mile trek up Snodgrass Mountain.

Many of these multi-use paths are popular among cyclists, too. Explore more than 700 miles of singletrack, taking note of famed rides like the beginner-friendly Lupine Trail and challenging 401 featuring switchbacks down Belleview Mountain. Lift-serviced terrain at Crested Butte Mountain Resort adds to the mix. Should you need a set of wheels, local outfitters including Handlebar Bike & Board and Big Al’s Bicycle Heaven have half- and full-day rentals available.
